RIVER POLLUTION AFFECTS CROPS AND CAUSES ILLNESS

According to Xinhua, authorities at the central and local levels are investigating the contamination of the local Yuanjiang River from a nearby metals factory in Taoyuan County, Hunan Province. One media report suggested that more than ten individuals had already died of cancer caused by untreated waste being discarded by the factory into the local waterways which in turn have affected local crops and food supplies.
