It has been widely published, in recent days, that there will be a swathe of "micro bus" rental stations across Changsha. These electric cars for hire come in two seater or four seater versions and can hit a top speed of 80km/h with a battery lifetime that goes to "hundreds of kilometers" after each full charge up.

In an effort to combat the rising air pollution levels that have hit national headlines, Changsha City currently plans to build hundreds of 'stations' with 1600 "micro buses", membership card system and a monthly or annual rental system. The two seat vehicle will start with a monthly price of 400yuan, the four seater for the price of 500 yuan per month; annual rental prices of 2400yuan or 3600yuan per year. In addition, if the vehicles breakdown in some way, the managing company has promised a speedy maintenance service.

Hunan's own 'new energy' automobile company chairman, Chen Weiqiang, helped to jointly launch the Geely Holding Group and Kangdi technology group project. Mr Chen went on to say that "[this] is mainly to promote new energy, now the environmental pollution is too serious,". This initiative follows on from a similar test project in Hangzhou which met with a good level of public approval.

Drivers still need to use the normal driver's license to drive the cars. Car hire staff will then assist the driver in inspecting the vehicle before signing a rental agreement.
